Good, straight forward Japanese comfort food. Best place around especially for katsu, fried pork, chicken, etc. in panko bread crumbs. I find the portions to be be ridiculously big however: close to twice the size of a comparable restaurant in Tokyo. While a decent value as is, it would be even more of a value if they made the portions more of a normal, edible size.

I just don't get it. The prices are good, but I'd rather pay one or two dollars more to get better quality food. My husband and I both got combo meals (he the teriyaki chicken, I one of the specials). The chicken cutlet was okay. The chicken teriyaki was okay. Everything was okay to meh. The place had a diner-like atmosphere and was packed, but the food just didn't do it for me.

***3.5 Stars*** Gombei has been around for as long as I can remember. While growing up in Menlo Park, this was my go to place for home-style Japanese food. I've had many memories here including enjoying my first bowl of udon! Quick Tip: Gombei isn't the type of Japanese restaurant to satisfy your sushi/sashimi cravings since there isn't a sushi bar. I'd suggest getting their donburi (rice bowls) or one of their dinner combination plates!

Was recommended this place by a friend, who said the price/quality was really good. The service was good, which pulled up the rating, but the food (based on what I had, which was the Chicken Udon) wasn't great. The noodles were soggy and the soup base was really salty or something - I kept having to drink more water. This was a little unexpected since I've eaten at other Gombei's in the area and they were pretty good. Or maybe their Udon just isn't that good, so you should stick to the combination lunch/dinners. Note: Parking was pretty bad...the lot in the back is tiny and if you aren't careful you can get boxed in.

My family has been going here for years and it's still some of the best Japanese food you can get in the South Bay. The same Japanese man has been running it ever since I was a child and it gives off a comfortable, familiar feel whenever I enter. Even my grandparents approve of the authenticity, which probably tells you more about the food than anything else! I usually order the shrimp ebi or chicken katsu dinner but their teriyaki chicken and saba dinners will not disappoint! The portions are large and the menu has a good selection; they also have room in the back for large parties. The downside is that it will get crowded around dinner and lunch, so arrive early or be prepared to wait! The parking lot is also cramped and hard to maneuver, and I'd advise parking on the street or in the neighborhood. They recently opened a new Gombei on Homestead and there's still a Gombei in San Jose Japantown. I haven't been to these as recently, but from what I remember the quality of food is just as good.

I'm really sad I didn't discover Gombei until my last month in Palo Alto...what a shame. I spent a semester abroad in Kyoto living with a home-stay family who fed me simple Japanese comfort food almost every day, and I miss it! Gombei serves up homey Japanese classics like curry, tonkatsu, and udon in huge portions for reasonable prices. Everything I've tried has been top-notch, but my favorites are the oyakodon, which is giant and flavorful down to the bottom of the bowl, and the unagi don, which is heaping with soft, delicious, sauced up eel. The feel of the place matches the food. Friendly, comfortable, unpretentious. It's a good place for a chill dinner with a group of friends or with family. I'd definitely bring my kids if I had them, and I think many people do, as there is never a shortage of tiny heads in Gombei. I swear last time I went, I saw some poor blonde woman sitting with around 8 more blondes all under 5 feet.

I'm not always one for Japanese food, but this place is not only authentic, but DELICIOUS! I've gone with a group of friends from Japan who say that this is the best Japanese food on the Peninsula, and I tend to agree. Gombei offers a number of vegetarian options, and even though it's focus is narrowly designed to exclude sushi, they are absolutely terrific at what they do. Even better, the staff is incredibly kind, attentive, and always smiling.

They have my husband's favorite chicken curry over rice which tastes similar to Thai Yellow Curry. and it's yummy! He and his co-workers had been going to Gombei for more than 15 years before they parted away. Gombei used to accept only cash but now they take credit card too. I love their soft tofu appetizer and cold noodles.

Best katsu curry in the area, period. For a very reasonable price too. Do note that all the Japanese curry dishes (which are the best imho) are only offered during lunchtime (1130-1330) The managers are both Japanese, so they do know what they're doing here. I come here for lunch all the time. Highly recommended.

Another great local restaurant. Good quality ingredients prepared in a unique way. First off, at dinner you should look first at the whiteboard specials. Order one of the huge ones if you want a full meal with a wide variety. Next, always order the fried stuffed tofu. An incredible and unique dish that serves 4 as a small appetizer. Wonderful green tea, but its $1. Not a sushi place, although they do offer some sushi dishes. Last night it was Ca roll and spicy tuna. The Ca roll was good because it wasn't mayonaisey. Caution: Parking here is really tight. Be prepared to park on the street, or back down the long driveway either after finding that the 6 spots are full or after dinner. Pretty cheap. Dinner for 4 was $50 before tip. They sat us in the back with a bunch of kids.
